Japan New and Old: Street Photography

April 2023 Tokyo & Kyoto--When traveling you make a lot of pictures. You take what you think is interesting. When you get home and edit, you try to decide what is worthwhile to show. And most importantly what group of images can tell a story. My fascination and affection for Japan (except sushi) come from my parents. They collected Japanese artwork. So on my travels, I try to find images that help show the people and culture.

It is vital not to make broad generalizations and make stereotypes, with that said Japan offers a rich cultural heritage as well as newer pop culture influences.  Through history, as an island, its isolation from other cultures allowed the Japanese to foster their own language, religion and customs.

The unique Traditions include tea ceremonies, calligraphy, respect for elders, a strong custom of etiquette, and a love of nature.  With other influences coming to Japan changes and challenges are affecting the customs.

These small glimpses of life help preserve wonderful memories that is the rich diversity and personality of the people of Japan.

All images shot with Nikon Z6 and Sony a7C, pack light, be inconspicuous as much as you can.
