OFC: The Show Must Go on

March 8-11, San Diego, CA--Despite the on-set of the pandemic and weeks before the stay at home order, the annual OFC, The Optical Fiber Communication Conference was held.  Attendance was smaller than previous years, but, there was tremendous amount of information and networking.  Many sessions were broadcast on the internet feed for those who couldn't attend. Technology ruled the day, speakers were able to make their presentations online and interact with participants.  

As part of a team of photographers, it was vital to document the event showing the vibrance and engagement of the attendees.  Given a schedule and working independently, finding those situations which highlighted the event.  

All images made in available light with a Nikon Z6, 24-120 Nikkor lens and 70-200 Nikkor lens.

Nobel laureate Gérard Mourou

October 2--Washington, DC--One of the perks of photographing events is you meet interesting and brilliant people.  Sometimes you just don't understand their particular line of greatness, but you do realize their statue and importance. Gerard Mourou is one of those people.   The Optical Society awarded him a prize in Laser Science on September 17, 2018 at the annual Frontiers in Optics and Laser Science Awards Ceremony and Conference.  (Fio + LS).  The Schawlow Prize in Laser Science is for Mourou's fundamental contributions in ultrafast, ultrahigh-field laser inventions such as chirped pulse amplification, that lead to the new discipline of relativistic optics.  On October 2, the Nobel Committee awarded Mourou along with two others the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for their "groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics".  Throughout the Conference, Mourou was photographed in several situations, his keynote speech, the award ceremony,  a step and repeat and with his wife at the reception.

March 13-15--San Diego, CA--The Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition held in San Diego attracts thousands of attendees.  As an attraction to their lounge, The Optical Society wanted to provide free portraits for people to use in their social media profiles.  In a small space we made a portrait studio, two continuous light, (Westcott Flex Lights) with a seamless white background, within 2 days, over 150 people took advantage of this offer.  Each person was given personal attention, many shots were made to get that one best image. The photos were made with a Nikon D850 in the RAW file format. The best image was selected, minor adjustments were made and emailed to each person within 3 days.

Frontiers in Optics FIO Annual Meeting

Over 1200 attendees from all over the world

Sept 18-20--Washington, DC--Frontiers in Optics FIO, OSA’s Annual Meeting, encompasses the breadth of optical science and engineering and provides an atmosphere that fosters the exchange of information between those working on fundamental research and those looking for solutions to engineering problems. Special symposia and other major events further highlight major advances in many selected areas.  Throughout the conference there are Plenary Sessions, Visionary Speakers,  academia and research presentations, vendors halls and parties.

Photos made with Nikon D850 and D810, 24-120mm Nikkor and 70-210mm Nikkor.  All shot with various ISO but on the high end in RAW files.  It ceases to amaze me how well these cameras shoot in poor lighting conditions.  With a little post production work in Lightroom, the images look good.

The Optical Society

February 9, 2013--Washington, DC--The Optical Society's  Board of Directors.  OSA is one of my 'newer' clients.  The members are remarkable: scientists, educators, inventors and many Nobel Prize Winners.  It is an honor just to be in the same room with everyone. No doubt many of my camera's functions were from discoveries and inventions made by OSA members

Every year at their conference, the board gathers and a group shot is made.  Early Saturday morning, in between meetings, they walk to a pre-determined location and pose for their photo.  Since time is of the essence this photo takes some planning;  A location near their meeting room, lights set-up, and situation planned.  In the lobby of the Palomar Hotel, there are four steps, a good location to do a group shot.  There is 'layering' so we can see everyone's face.  The board congregates, they go to a spot on the steps, a quick check to make sure no one is blocking someone.   In one minute and 32 seconds, eight frames are made. And the 2013 OSA Board photo is done.

The Optical Society

September 12, 2012--Washington, DC-- The Optical Society along with 3 other science associations, presented the report, Essential Technologies for Our Future: Optics and Photonics Leading the Way.  Secretary of Energy, Dr. Steven Chu was the keynote speaker.  OSA Vice President Philip H. Bucksbaum is with Dr. Chu on stage.

Held in the Horizon Ballroom at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC, the lighting was mostly fluorescent and weak.  Shooting at 12,800 ISO and correcting the color temperature to 2600K, with noise reduction really helped to make quality images.  Shot on a Nikon D800.
